Current Resource Management Challenges Facing BLM:
A Remote Sensing Perspective
Bud Cribley
BLM Deputy Assistant Director for Renewable Resources and Planning
Summary
The mission of the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management, is to sustain the health, diversity and productivity of 261 million acres of public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The BLM routinely collects data on site-specific, permitted activities. This data is hard to aggregate on the national level, and much of it is not in a digital format. Significant ecological challenges in the West have led to new approaches. The Assessment, Inventory and Monitoring Strategy and reorganization of the National Operations Center in Denver will facilitate ecoregional assessments.
