Abstract

Leaders in the Intermountain Region have asked why we should consider developing mid-level vegetation maps when we already have the LANDFIRE existing vegetation product. To answer this question, a recently completed mid-level map of the Bridger-Teton National Forest was compared with the LANDFIRE existing vegetation layer for Map Zone 21. We compared the map legends and their underlying classification systems as well as making areal and point-based comparisons of the map products. The LANDFIRE layer was developed as an intermediate step in producing fuel and fire behavior maps. It was not designed to address all the questions of land managers. The mid-level map provides additional information that can complement the use of LANDFIRE products at finer scales.
