Abstract

Despite the distinct differences between domestic and global biomass burning research requirements there is much common ground between USFS and other agencies technological needs. These include fire and ecological monitoring, atmospheric correction for surface retrievals, and ultimately decision aids. In this talk, an overview of Navy and NASA systems and products that might be applicable to forest service fire needs is given. These include aerosol and fire products, meteorological systems, and process modeling. Conceptual models of how NRL handles data in support of operations is presented and parallels to possible forest service needs are drawn. We then show how NASA products in particular can be used in support near real time operations. The talk concludes with future directions of systems development including fundamental research on atmospheric predictability.
