Access Nationwide GIS Data Over the Network Using ArcGIS Image Server and ArcGIS Server

ArcGIS Image server is an extension to ArcGIS (9.1 and newer) that allows rapid viewing of imagery and continuous raster data over the network in an ArcMap environment. Many nationwide services are currently in place and include: Imagery (1 meter aerial photography, satellite imagery); Topographic layers (shaded relief, aspect), Map layers (Forest Service softcopy and secondary base maps, USGS topographic maps); Custom regional services.

ArcGIS Server is a tool to publish imagery, raster, and vector data services to HTML websites, web map services (WMS, IMS, ArcGIS Services, KML). Benefits of publishing web services through ArcGIS Server include: Ability to include legends with categorical raster data; Ability to serve data outside of ArcGIS (HTML, ArcGIS Explorer, other WMS clients).

ArcGIS Explorer – GIS for Everyone in a “Virtual Globe” Environment

Virtual Globe software such as Google Earth, Microsoft Virtual Earth 3D, and NASA Worldwind, are popular tools for viewing imagery, GPS data, and KML files in a 3D environment among managers, biologists, and the public. What these viewers lack is the ability view and query local (Shapefiles, Coverages, Geodatabases,…) and server based GIS data, and perform geoprocessing. ArcGIS Explorer provides users with little or no GIS experience to view the most common ESRI supported raster, vector, and web based GIS formats in a familiar, 3D, virtual globe environment. In addition ArcGIS Explorer supports KML and is expandable with data from the ArcGIS Explorer Resource Center.

Leica Geosystems Enterprise Image Processing Solution (Apollo)

Apollo is an enterprise data center solution to manage, view, web publish, disseminate, and provide image processing for raw imagery and raster data sets over the intranet. Once fully implemented, image processing capabilities within Leica Geosystem’s desktop image processing software Imagine will eventually be available in Apollo through a web client interface. Apollo will also provide streaming imagery and raster data access for web maps via WMS, WCS, WFS, WPS links, or HTML publication services.

Initial testing of the Apollo system has begun and the system will continue to be tested as new components and data are added to ensure that it will meet the image processing needs of the Forest Service.
