NASA Earth Science and Applications - Partnerships in Progress
Teresa Fryberger
NASA Director of Applied Sciences, Earth Science Division, Science Mission Directorate
Summary
The Earth Science mission is to study Earth from space to advance scientific understanding and meet societal needs. Five major activities: (1) Conduct satellite missions, (2) Sponsor cutting-edge research in 6 Focus Areas, (3) Make high-quality data products available, (4) Discover and demonstrate practical applications of NASA Earth science research and capabilities, and (5) Develop new technologies to improve Earth observation capabilities. As a research agency, NASA cannot guarantee continuity of satellite observations or provide data products indefinitely. These capabilities are typically transferred to partner agencies such as the USDA Forest Service (USFS), USGS, EPA, BLM and NOAA.
